CHAPTER FIFTEEN—Cami

Cami looked at Cassandra in the passenger seat of her car and sighed. The older woman had explained the necessity of what they were about to do, and Cami had agreed to it, but that didn’t mean she liked it.

“I hate giving them even the smallest of bones,” Cami said, and Cassandra chuckled dryly.

“You were going to have to make a choice or two sooner or later,” Cassandra pointed out. Cami nodded.

“I know, I know,” she grumbled. “I just don’t like doing it because someone is making me,” Cami said. She stopped at a red light and sighed again.

Doctor Anand was concerned about the amount of stress she was under, and—in a mixture of personal and professional advice—had told her that whatever she could do to reduce the stress in her life would make her pregnancy easier to manage. Cami thought the doctor was holding something back, some concern or issue that she could see, that she didn’t want to bring up until she was absolutely sure.

And of course, I can’t accuse her of holding out on me, so I just have to wait and see, Cami thought, her irritation at everything increasing.

“You aren’t doing it because anyone is making you do it,” Cassandra corrected her. “You’re doing it because one, you’re ensuring that your child will have an officially recognized father—or, in this case, fathers—and two because it puts you in the best position to head off any attempts to turn Miranda against you.”

“She’s a really nice girl,” Cami said, and then cringed because Miranda was only a few years younger than she herself was. “But I kind of feel like if she had never developed any kind of curiosity about her biological family, I’d be in a better position overall.”

“And if you’d never met Alistair at a club, you wouldn’t have a huge house and a handful of hot men trying to nail you down and convince you to settle for them,” Cassandra pointed out. “My heart bleeds for you. It really does.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve still got morning sickness, my ankles keep swelling up like store brand bake-and-eat rolls, and my hair is falling out,” Cami countered.

“I lost two teeth with my second child,” Cassandra said. “And your hair isn’t falling out that badly. No one can tell but you.”

“If Miranda would just make a deal with me, I wouldn’t have to do this,” Cami said, knowing she was whining but not caring. “Instead, she’s meeting with the Elders, hanging out with Egans…”

“She’s looking out for herself,” Cassandra told her. “You and she aren’t close enough to think like a family unit, yet. You’re both looking out for your individual best interests.”

“Yeah, well, at least I’m offering her something,” Cami grumbled.

“You need the Elders to make her a solid offer,” Cassandra said. “Choosing people to bond with, making a statement that you’re going to settle down, will decrease her value to them and put them in a position to make a solid statement as to whether they’ll recognize her or not.
